American Salisbury Steak
Juicy ground beef patties smothered in rich mushroom gravy
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the meat mixtureIn a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, grated onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined, being careful not to overmix which can make the steaks tough.
-
Form the pattiesDivide the meat mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into oval patties about 3/4-inch thick. Use your thumb to make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent it from puffing up during cooking.
-
Cook the steaksHeat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side until nicely browned and cooked to medium (internal temperature of 160°F). Transfer to a plate and cover loosely with foil to keep warm.
-
Make the mushroom gravyIn the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and cook for 4-5 minutes until they release their moisture and begin to brown. Add butter and allow it to melt. Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and stir constantly for 1 minute to cook the flour.
-
Finish the gravySlowly whisk in the beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
-
ServeReturn the steaks to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy over each patty. Simmer for 2-3 minutes to reheat the steaks. Serve hot with mashed potatoes and your favorite vegetables, generously topped with mushroom gravy.
