Instructions

  1. Prepare the whitefish
Carefully remove any remaining skin and bones from the smoked whitefish. Flake the fish into a medium bowl, breaking it into small pieces but being careful not to mash it completely.
  2. Mix the base
In a separate bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sour cream, and lemon juice until smooth and well combined. This creates the creamy base for your salad.
  3. Add the aromatics
Fold in the chopped red onion, celery, capers, dill, and horseradish (if using) to the mayonnaise mixture. These ingredients add texture, freshness, and complexity to the salad.
  4. Combine and season
Gently fold the mayonnaise mixture into the flaked whitefish until just combined. Season with black pepper and salt, keeping in mind that the smoked fish is already salty. Taste and adjust seasonings if needed.
  5. Chill and serve
Cover the bowl and refrigerate the whitefish salad for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld. Serve chilled with bagels, crackers, or rye bread, garnished with additional dill sprigs if desired.
