Marzipan Fruits
Colorful almond-based confections shaped like miniature fruits
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the marzipan baseIn a large bowl, knead together the almond paste, confectioners' sugar, corn syrup, and almond extract until smooth and pliable. If the mixture is too sticky, add more confectioners' sugar. If too dry, add a few drops of water. Cover with plastic wrap to prevent drying.
-
Color the marzipanDivide the marzipan into 5-6 portions. Add different food coloring to each portion and knead until the color is evenly distributed. For brown marzipan, mix in cocoa powder. Keep covered when not using to prevent drying out.
-
Shape the fruitsFor apples and pears: Roll colored marzipan into balls and shape into fruit forms. For strawberries: Shape red marzipan into cones and press lightly with a toothpick for seed indentations. For oranges: Roll orange marzipan into spheres and score lightly with a knife. For bananas: Roll yellow marzipan into cylinders and curve slightly.
-
Add details and textureUse small tools or toothpicks to add texture to your fruits. Create dimples for oranges, a small indentation for apples, and lines for melon sections. Insert cloves for stems where appropriate, or use small pieces of green marzipan to create leaves and stems.
-
Add shine and finishing touchesBrush the shaped fruits lightly with strained apricot jam to create a realistic shine. For fuzzy fruits like peaches, dust with a tiny amount of confectioners' sugar mixed with a drop of the appropriate food coloring. Let set for 10 minutes.
-
Create a displayArrange your marzipan fruits on a decorative plate or in a small fruit basket lined with tissue paper. Add small sprigs of mint or other herbs between the fruits for a realistic presentation.
