Instructions

  1. Chill the serving glasses
Place 4 small glass cups, mugs, or dessert bowls in the freezer for about 10 minutes before serving. This helps keep the gelato from melting too quickly when the hot espresso is poured over.
  2. Prepare the espresso
Brew 4 shots of fresh, strong espresso using an espresso machine or moka pot. The espresso should be hot and freshly made for the best contrast with the cold gelato.
  3. Scoop the gelato
Remove the chilled glasses from the freezer. Place one generous scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream into each glass. If using the liqueur, drizzle about 1/2 tablespoon over each scoop of gelato.
  4. Pour the espresso
Immediately pour one shot of hot espresso over each scoop of gelato. The hot coffee will begin to melt the gelato slightly, creating a creamy mixture at the bottom of the glass.
  5. Add the garnishes
Quickly sprinkle each serving with the grated dark chocolate, crushed chocolate-covered coffee beans, and crumbled amaretti cookies if using. Dust lightly with cocoa powder and add a small mint leaf for garnish if desired.
  6. Serve immediately
Present the affogato right away, while the contrast between hot and cold is at its best. Provide small spoons so guests can enjoy the melting gelato and coffee mixture.
