Instructions

  1. Prepare the toppings
Set out small bowls with ketchup, remoulade sauce, sweet brown mustard, crispy fried onions, fresh diced onions, and pickle relish. This allows everyone to customize their hot dogs with authentic Icelandic toppings.
  2. Simmer the hot dogs
In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a gentle simmer. Do not boil vigorously. Add the hot dogs and simmer for about 5 minutes until heated through. Icelandic hot dogs are traditionally simmered rather than grilled to maintain their juiciness.
  3. Toast the buns (optional)
While the hot dogs are simmering, lightly butter the inside of each bun and toast them in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side. This step is optional but adds a nice texture contrast.
  4. Assemble the hot dogs
Place each hot dog in a bun. For an authentic Icelandic 'eina með öllu' (one with everything), layer toppings in this order: sweet brown mustard first, then ketchup, remoulade sauce, diced raw onions, and finish with crispy fried onions on top.
  5. Serve immediately
Serve the hot dogs while still warm, wrapped in paper for the authentic street food experience. In Iceland, these are often eaten standing up at outdoor kiosks regardless of the weather.
