Rich, chocolatey squares with a perfect fudgy center
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Prepare the baking panPreheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9x9-inch (23x23cm) baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides to lift the finished brownies out easily.
-
Melt the chocolate and butterIn a medium heatproof bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water (or using a microwave in 30-second bursts), melt the dark chocolate and butter together, stirring occasionally until smooth. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
-
Mix the wet ingredientsIn a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined. Gradually add the melted chocolate mixture, whisking until smooth and glossy.
-
Add the dry ingredientsSift the flour, cocoa powder, and salt directly into the bowl with the wet ingredients. Fold gently with a rubber spatula until just combined - don't overmix. Fold in the chocolate chips and walnuts if using.
-
Bake the browniesPour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs attached. Be careful not to overbake, as this will make the brownies dry rather than fudgy.
-
Cool and cutAllow the brownies to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Once cooled, lift out using the parchment paper overhang and cut into 16 squares with a sharp knife. For cleaner cuts, refrigerate for 30 minutes before cutting.
