
Apple Spice Danish Braid

Prepare the apple fillingIn a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, and lemon juice. Toss gently until apples are evenly coated. Let stand for 15 minutes to allow flavors to blend and juices to form.

Prepare the pastryPreheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Unfold one sheet of puff pastry onto the prepared baking sheet. Using a rolling pin, roll it out to approximately 12x16 inches, maintaining a rectangular shape.

Form the braidUsing a sharp knife, make diagonal cuts along both long sides of the pastry, about 1-inch wide and 3 inches long, leaving the center third of the pastry intact to hold the filling. Spoon the apple mixture down the center of the pastry, leaving about an inch of space at both ends.

Create the braid patternStarting at one end, fold the top and bottom flaps over the filling. Then alternately fold the diagonal strips from each side over the filling, creating a braided appearance. Gently press the ends to seal.

Bake the danishBrush the entire pastry with egg wash. Sprinkle with sliced almonds if using. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until the pastry is puffed and golden brown. Check after 15 minutes and cover loosely with foil if browning too quickly.

Prepare the glazeWhile the danish is cooling, prepare the glaze by whisking together confectioners' sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add more milk if needed to achieve a drizzling consistency.

Finish and serveWhen the danish has cooled for about 10 minutes, drizzle the glaze over the top in a zigzag pattern. Allow to set for 5 minutes before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.
